Cliff “Pappy” Goad

James Clifton Goad was born in Warren County, Kentucky on May 9, 1912.  Cliff was given the nickname “Pappy” when it was learned that he was the oldest driver (age 39) at Beech Bend Park during the inaugural racing season in 1951.  Cliff was described as being 6 feet tall, weighing 180 lbs., with blue eyes, medium brown hair, and a light complexion.

In 1951 Cliff had owned his own automobile repair garage near the Hardcastle Store in Richardsville for the past 15 years.  Cliff was an avid stock car racer, building and driving his own cars.  In the past, Cliff had been an ardent motorcycle enthusiast, later graduating to airplanes.  Cliff owned and piloted his plane all over western Kentucky and Tennessee.
